Our next dance will be on Saturday, May 11th, and Will Feature American Style Tango

Most non-ballroom dancers hear “Tango” and think of Argentine Tango.   After all, the partners look elegant and embrace cheek-to-cheek and sometimes they even dance on the same foot.   It’s all perfect for romance movies, like: “Scent of a Woman”, “Last Tango in Paris”, “The Tango Lesson”, to name a few.

But as ballroom dancers, we don’t think that way!   Nope, when we think of Tango, we think of American Style (or International Style).     For us, partners dance in a big frame and they dance as the mirror of each other, on opposite feet (unless you’re deliberately doing something dramatic).

Speaking of dramatic, Tango music has a characteristic flourish at every musical phrase and ballroom Tango gives you the styling tools to mark (show off at) those flourishes. At the May dance we’ll feature American Style Tango in which you, in essence, move around the dance floor like a stalking cat and then, suddenly, at a musical flourish, do something eye-catching and partner-thrilling.   Then, stalking a little farther down the floor, you wait for another flourish, and show off another eye-catching and partner-thrilling maneuver.  It’s a lot of fun-with-style dancing. When you catch the music right at the flourish, it’s a blast.

But, doing this dramatic styling means getting the fundamentals right.   And getting the fundamentals starts with great teachers who have devoted untold hours to training, practicing and competing under the tutelage of the best teachers and coaches and who now, themselves, are renown teachers and coaches.    As luck would have it, we have just such teachers lined up for you at our May 11th dance.

Jonathan Medlin & Malin Allert are Championship Level Amateur Dancesport competitors in International Standard and American Smooth.  They have over twenty years of competition and teaching experience in all four styles of ballroom dance.  Together they coach the NC State Ballroom Dance team and are the organizers of the Triangle Open Dancesport Competition held at NCSU.
