Our Next Dance Will Be on Saturday, January 11th, and Will Feature American Style Rumba

What's Rumba

If there is one Latin ballroom dance you should make your own, it’s the Rumba. Once you've learned the basic step and a few turns you can really start to enjoy the essence of Latin music by incorporating “Cuban motion”.

Rumba originated in Cuban music and dance in the 19th century. In the early 1920s it became popular in the US through movies. Audiences were spellbound by the exotic rhythms and all the sultry body actions that rumba dancers employed, actions we now call "Cuban Motion". Before you incorporate Cuban Motion, Rumba can seem simple, like a line dance for 2 people. Once you've learned to incorporate a little of the technique of Cuban Motion it becomes an enveloping conversation between the dancers and the music. Much more emotional, much more fun.

Would you like to learn Cuban Motion from the best possible teacher? At the January dance we’ll bring you the best Rumba instructor in this entire region, Inga Sirkaite.

Inga and her husband and partner, Robertas Maleckis, are the premiere Latin instructors in North Carolina. Born in Lithuania and dancing from age seven, they developed their skills together first in their home country then in several centers of dance in Europe. This advanced training helped them make it, in 2002, to the grand finals of Latin dance at the most prestigious competition in the World: the British Open in Blackpool, England. Soon after this they came to the US as teachers and later, in 2009, opened their own studio, Elite Ballroom in Morrisville.

Key points for our next dance:

  • Doors open at 7:00 pm.

  • Inga Sirkaite will teach a basic Rumba lesson 7:20-8:15pm, included with your admission.

  • General dancing, with music for all the ballroom dances and most popular social dances, will continue after the lesson until 10:30. We’ll have some extra Rumba music so you can practice what’s taught in the lesson.

  • We provide a printed playlist showing all songs that will be played along with the suggested dance for each song.

  • We provide water, a selection of sodas, ice and snacks.

  • No partner needed, just bring your dance shoes and a smile.
